The Stormwater Speaker Series called it a wrap for 2016 in San Diego last Wednesday, November 9th. What started off as a modest forum has transformed itself into a sought after stormwater event that has traveled across Southern California over the last seven months. The future looks bright for Torrent to continue the Stormwater Speaker Series and introduce new speakers, and stormwater topics, at every stop. The Speaker Series aims to transform itself along with the conversation on stormwater in 2017 and continue to deliver the most up to date information in the industry.
After each event we open up our website for “Next Event Location” submissions and plan our next stop based on the responses. The overwhelming request for San Diego over the last few months made it the perfect spot to conclude this year’s series. We were joined by over 45 new and familiar faces at the beautiful Marriott Del Mar along with past speakers Dave Albus, Martin Spongberg, and Mark Grey.
Dave Albus joined us to present “Percolation 101” and participate in a live Q&A with attendees. “I was pleased to see the strong participation by both civil engineering firms and municipal staff who are plan checking WQMP plans. Clearly there is an interest in understanding the geotechnical side of designing BMPs.” (Dave Albus, P.E., Albus-Keefe & Associates)
Martin Spongberg joined us for a third time presenting “Using Infiltration for Compliance with (or exemption from) the Industrial Permit” that includes strategies for using infiltration BMPs for IGP compliance. For the second time, we were joined by Mark Grey from the Building Industry Association of Southern California. Mr. Grey’s presentation, “Building and Construction Industry Perspectives on Stormwater Management Permit Compliance” brought in new information to our attendees and provided thoughtful insight during Q&A discussions.
One of our own, James Mayer, presented “Recharging Ground Water Through the Vadose Zone”. Mr. Mayer noted how the combination of speakers at this event was the perfect combination of presentations for our audience and reflected on our humble beginnings. “We weren’t sure how it would go when we scheduled our first event back in May, but seeing attendance increase each time and receiving nothing but positive feedback has confirmed the Speaker Series is providing timely and relevant information! It has been a privilege to be part of these events and I’m looking forward to many more.” (Jim Mayer, Technical Marketing Manager, Torrent Resources)
While the series is primarily intended for engineering professionals, it is really appropriate for anyone interested in stormwater and how it’s managed. We were fortunate enough to meet with over 155 engineering professionals over the course of 2016’s Stormwater Speaker Series events and look forward to seeing many more in 2017.
