Those operating in the stormwater industry often feel like the “THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY” message falls on deaf ears to the general public. The civil design community and regulators certainly understand that throwing away stormwater is no longer an option, but surely that message only survives in the world of those that live and breathe it.
Which is why I was surprised to see an article in my Google News Feed picked up by technology blog Gizmodo discussing “How Technology Can Help Cities Make Better Use of Stormwater.” Gizmodo is a part of the Gawker Media family of blogs that run the gamut from technology and cars to sports and gossip. An unlikely place for an article about the need for improvement in the management of stormwater. Does this mean the message is reaching a broader audience? That still remains to be seen, but I do know the conversation about stormwater and the need to treat it as a valuable resource has gone national. Make that international level given the author of the article hails from Toronto.
